about kattam
Of Québécois and Moroccan heritage, Kattam first studied percussion and classical singing. His artistic journey was then deeply shaped by travel and musical studies abroad: India in 2003 (tabla and dhol), Cuba in 2005 (congas and timbales), Guinea in 2007 (djembe and doundoun), and Morocco (derbouka). Back in Montreal, he continued developing his skills in pop and contemporary percussion.
On stage, Kattam has performed with numerous bands and projects including Ayrad, Wesli Band, Bambara Trans, La Mandragore, and Niyaz, as well as alongside renowned artists such as The Lost Fingers, Marie-Mai, Lynda Thalie, and Mes Aïeux. He has also developed strong expertise as a teacher and team-building facilitator.
His career includes several notable experiences, including collaborations with Cirque du Soleil in 2009, participation in the 2010 Winter Olympics, appearances at the Prix Jutra in 2012, and film recording sessions under the direction of Martin Léon. He also created a dance-percussion choreography for a reality TV show and played the title role in the stage production Ali au pays d’Alice.
Building on extensive experience performing for young audiences — nearly 200 shows per year — Kattam created the highly successful children’s production Kattam and his Tam-Tams. He later released the albums De Tombouctou à Bombay (2016), Timbuktu to Bombay (2017), and a DVD in 2018, earning a total of 18 awards and nominations, including recognition from the ADISQ and the Juno Awards. He has toured extensively across Canada and the United States, performing for thousands of children. In 2026, Kattam unveiled his first mainstream single, Au cœur de mon cœur.
